Situated on the Caloosahatchee River in Ft. Myers, the winter vacation home of Thomas Edison is one of Florida's historic and beautiful treasures. Completed in 1886, "seminole lodge" was the retreat and work place for the prolific inventor until his death in 1931. The neighboring property - "The Mangoes" - was the getaway for Henry Ford. Edison and Ford spent many winters working, talking and relaxing on these 17-acres of riverfront estates in southwest Florida. "seminole lodge" and "The Mangoes" are rambling homes with gracious furnishings and architecture reminiscent of a bygone era, riverfront porches and sweeping verandas.
Legend has it the V-8 engine was dreamed up here. Edison's Botanical Gardens contains over 1,000 varieties of plants from all over the world, including African sausage trees and a Banyan tree. One of the most absorbing features of the Edison Estate, Thomas Edison's Laboratory is where Edison conducted his last research on goldenrod as a source of natural rubber.
